A great big can of slithering worms

Hello all,

Well, I've decided this 23 Things "thing" can either be stress-free or stress-ful depending on your prevailing personality.

The stress-free approach is to just follow the simple instructions, learn a little bit, and don't worry about anything else.

The stress-ful approach is to explore some of the nagging little questions that are eating their way into your brain and try to bring them to some kind of resolution. This second approach comes with the added dilemna of whether to "go live" with these nagging little questions and risk looking like a total dope in front of your peers.

Example?? Here goes with my dopey question for this week: what is the purpose of clicking on that "follow" option and making yourself a "follower" of somebody else's blog. I'm guessing this is purely designed to make the recipient "leader" feel good about the number of disciples they have "following" their blog. Is that right? And isn't subscribing to somebody's blog via RSS feed making yourself a follower of their blog anyway? So that brings me back to my original question....

As I said, this 23 Things "thing" is all too easy but scratch a little beneath the surface and there's a great big can of worms down there.

Those worms are going to be digging into my brain all night tonight. I can feel it...

  1. well, I think the idea of Followers is that the more people that follow you, the more important the blog is in search ranking. Also, getting their RSS feed means that they would not know who you are and as such, would not think of taking a look at your blog.. it is a community that works on the concept of scratch my back I'll scratch yours, of course only if your back is not smelly.. I mean your blog is interesting to follow :-)
So it depends on preference, if you want maximum exposure for your blog you try to have as many like minded followers and you follow them too, if you don't care about exposure you simply subscribe to their RSS feed.

OOh on a side note, it is actually easier to subscribe to RSS feeds if they put a link directly on their blog. Blog Post does not provide such a link by default, however you can add it yourself to your blog, just like how it looks on my own blog.

  2. I'd say libweb has it. RSS is sort of following without letting them know! Plus i think following only works for blog platforms that work together, so if someone started a blog on Wordpress instead of blogger I think you wouldn't be able to 'follow' it.
